First visit. Golden Circle landmarks and the essential introduction.
Back for Sigrun and Martin—a visit held together by people, not places.
Reykjavík as home base. Active geology, local culture, no checklist repeat.
Monday · 17 August
A deliberately gentle first day, with enough air around the flight.
DL178 from Detroit. Airport transfer, then home in Reykjavík around 09:15.
Breakfast, unpacking and sleep if needed. No heroics after the overnight flight.
Ease back into Reykjavík, then walk down toward the Old Harbour.
A short harbour-view pause at Geirsgata 5, directly beside the tour boats—coffee without a detour before check-in.
Coffee stopA compact one-hour trip—late in the season, weather and sea permitting.
Elding tourFine-casual small plates by Hallgrímskirkja, with wild mushroom risotto, lamb, duck, chicken and beef alongside a few fish dishes—flexible, shareable and not seafood-led.

About 110–120 kilometres return. Check SafeTravel, the IMO hazard map, volcanic gas and roads before the car moves.
Live safety statusTwenty-five minutes by the waterfront at Norðurbakki 1 for serious coffee and a sourdough pastry, directly on the way to Reykjanes.
Coffee stopRead the rebuilt road and northern defensive works from the car. Use only a signed visitor turnout if one is open—never stop on the Route 43 or 426 shoulder, climb a barrier or step onto lava.
Impact storySee where the January 2024 flow entered the town and destroyed three homes. Remain on public pavement and behind every fence.
Impact storyA fissure at least ten metres deep was found beneath the indoor artificial-turf pitch. The fissure is not a public viewing interior: stay in the open paved exterior only if it is accessible that day.
RÚV reportTwo close public-street stops along the reactivated Stamphólsgjá fault zone: the former restaurant over the fissure, then shifted and repaired ground on Víkurbraut.
Official routePause at Bryggjan and support one of the local businesses keeping the town alive.
BryggjanHome around 15:30, preserving two quiet hours before dinner. If the morning runs late, make Brikk a fifteen-minute coffee-to-go.
A candlelit glass at the hidden wine bar on Veghúsastígur. The calendar hold runs until 17:15, leaving a short walk to Sümac for 17:30.
Wine barFirst seating: lively sharing plates, cocktails, and a firm 19:45 departure.
RestaurantSigrun and Claire check in for their 20:30 ticket. Martin collects them around 22:30.

Read source“Open” does not mean safe: the town’s overall hazard is still assessed as considerable. Stay on public roads and marked paths, never step onto lava or open ground, keep out of properties and fenced areas, note the exits, and leave immediately if sirens sound.

Field notes
No luggage relay, no hotel choreography. Each day starts and ends in the city.
Use Kjarvalsstaðir, Lava Show or Perlan. The trip still works without forcing the sea.
Switch to the Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel or a safe Kleifarvatn–Seltún loop. A closure is the decision.
Lava TunnelLeave Port 9 by 17:15 for Sümac at 17:30, leave dinner by 19:45, and arrive at Sky Lagoon by 20:15 for the 20:30 entry.
